Eric Ashton signed for Wigan for £150 in 1955 after being spotted playing rugby union for The Royal Artillery. A classy centre known for his tactical awareness and leadership, Ashton quickly formed a formidable partnership with wing Billy Boston, and his professionalism, talent and intelligence saw him awarded the club captaincy. He went on to lead Wigan to numerous honours, including three Challenge Cup victories (1958, 1959, and 1965) and the 1960 league championship title. Ashton finished his Wigan career with almost 500 appearances, and he had the distinction of being the first rugby league player to be honoured by the Queen when he was awarded the MBE in 1966.
