Gilbert Benausse was a pivotal figure in French rugby league during the 1950s and 1960s. A gifted stand-off renowned for his creative flair and goal-kicking ability, Benausse was a key member of the France squads in the 1954 and 1957 Rugby League World Cup campaigns, and was voted player of the tournament in the 1954 competition. Benausse also played a crucial role in France’s resurgence as a powerhouse of international rugby league, helping them to a shock series victory against the much-favoured Kangaroos on their 1955 tour of Australia.
