Puig Aubert was one of France’s greatest rugby league players. A brilliant fullback, he was known not only for his exceptional kicking and flamboyant attacking style, but also for his penchant for smoking cigarettes, sometimes even during the game. Aubert captained France to their famous 1951 test series win over Australia – a landmark achievement in rugby league. He also played a key role in France reaching the 1954 Rugby League World Cup final. Aubert helped to elevate French rugby league to global prominence, and in doing so became a national icon who was voted French sportsman of the year in 1951.
