Jean Galia was a pioneer of French rugby league, instrumental in establishing the sport in France during the 1930s. A former rugby union international, he led the first French rugby league team on their inaugural tour of England in 1934. Galia captained France in their first-ever Test match against England in 1934 and played a crucial role in developing the sport domestically. Though his playing career was short-lived, his influence as a promoter and coach helped rugby league gain a strong foothold in France. He is remembered as the “father of French rugby league” and a key figure in its early history.
