Olsen Filipaina

Olsen Filipaina was a cult hero amongst New Zealand rugby league fans, representing the Kiwis between 1977 and 1986. A powerful and skillful centre or five-eighth, “The Big O” was known for his fierce tackling, strong running and try-scoring prowess. He famously starred for New Zealand in their 1985 test series against Australia, outplaying Wally Lewis and earning widespread acclaim that saw him named man of the series. Filipaina’s imposing frame allied to deceptively explosive pace made him a crowd favourite, and his legacy endures as a pioneer for Pasifika players and a legend in Kiwi rugby league history.
