
Cliff Johnson was a cornerstone of New Zealand rugby league during the 1950s, earning 34 Test caps for the Kiwis between 1950 and 1960. A physically imposing and tough-as-teak forward, Johnson was regarded as a master tactician whose leadership skills saw him rewarded with the captaincy on 14 occasions. He played a key role in New Zealand’s 1954, 1957 and 1960 Rugby League World Cup campaigns, representing the Kiwis with distinction. In 2007, Johnson’s legacy as an all-time-great was secured when he was named as captain of the New Zealand national rugby league team of the century.
