Stanley Gene

Stanley Gene enjoyed a 14-year representative career for Papua New Guinea, having made his his test début against France in 1994. He subsequently went on to represent the Kumuls in the 1995, 2000 and 2008 Rugby League World Cups. Although he was a versatile utility player who could effectively cover most positions, Gene played the majority of his test football in the stand-off role. His all-action style made him a firm fans’ favourite, and he is widely considered a national hero in his home country. After his farewell performance in the 2008 World Cup, Gene was carried aloft from the field on his teammates’ shoulders, and given a standing ovation by the adoring Kumuls supporters.
