Bal Numapo was the complete centre, combining great handling skills, a strong fend, elusive footwork, solid defence and the ability to kick goals. A household name in his native Papua New Guinea, Numapo was a mainstay of the Kumuls team in the 1980s and early 90s, captaining the side on multiple occasions. He was also recognised for his consistent performances by earning selection for the Rest of the World team that took on Great Britain in 1988. An international career highlight saw him kick 5 goals and a drop goal in Papua New Guinea’s shock win over the Great Britain tourists at Danny Leahy Oval in 1990 in what was subsequently dubbed the ‘Tear Gas Test’.
