Arthur Atkinson represented Castleford from the mid 1920s to the early 1940s. Playing primarily as a centre, the former coal miner had size and power that made him a handful for opposition defences. He was also a reliable kicker, once kicking a then world record for a goal in any form of rugby from 75 yards out. Atkinson’s strong leadership qualities saw him awarded the club captaincy in 1930. He subsequently led Castleford to their first major honour in the form of the 1932-33 Yorkshire League. He also captained the club to a first ever Challenge Cup victory in the 1935 final at Wembley Stadium.
