Alex Murphy is a true legend of St Helens, whose career with the club began in 1956 and spanned over a decade. Renowned for his exceptional skills as a scrum-half, Murphy quickly became a central figure in the team, due to his strategic vision, deft passing, and game-breaking ability. His influence was pivotal in St Helens’ success during the 1950s and 1960s, contributing significantly to two Championship titles and two Challenge Cups. His competitive and combative nature earned him the nickname ‘Murphy the Mouth’, and he is still regarded as one of the greatest British halfbacks in history.
