Wally Lewis signed for Wakefield Trinity in 1983 in a blaze of publicity, as he became the highest paid player in the British game after commanding a £30,000 fee for his 10-game stint. The Australian superstar helped the club to five wins during his stay, including a hat-trick performance in a thrilling win over St Helens. Unfortunately for Trinity, they failed to win another game after his departure, and ended the season being relegated to the then Second Division. Despite such a short stay, Lewis made a big impression on the Wakefield fans, and the club fanzine was subsequently named “Wally Lewis is Coming”.
