Derek ‘Rocky’ Turner was transferred from Oldham to Wakefield Trinity for the sum of £8000 in 1959. His signing proved instrumental to Wakefield’s success in the early 60s, becoming captain and leading the club to a flurry of trophies. This included 3 Challenge Cup wins at Wembley Stadium in 1960, 1962 and 1963. A rugged, no-nonsense back-rower who was regarded as one of the toughest players in the game, he also had the distinction of knocking out star actor Richard Harris during the filming of classic 60s movie ‘This Sporting Life’. Turner was inducted in to the RFL Hall of Fame in 2018.
