Ellery Hanley started his career for Bradford with a try-scoring debut against Rochdale Hornets in 1978. By the early 80s he had become one of the leading players in the game, and was a regular in the Great Britain side. His spectacular length-of-the-field score against Featherstone Rovers in the 1983 Challenge Cup semi-final has become one of the most replayed tries in television history. Hanley’s last season for Bradford in 1984-85 saw him score a remarkable 55 tries – a record for a non-winger. This achievement earned him the coveted Man of Steel award as the most valuable player in the British game.
